Lol! You featured what is probably the most confusing and useless web design how-to video I’ve ever seen in my whole life! I agree. It’s always easier to deal with a web dev company, one that’s local. And being local has a guaranteed accessibility. You can call or drop by their office. I’ve outsourced some work outside the country in the past, and it just gave me a big headache!

Good for you, Peter! If you’ve found a great local web dev partner, then stick it out with them. Web development is a continuous process, and you will need updates every now and then. It’s always easier to deal with a team that already knows your goals and needs. And if they’re doing great work getting your site on top of search engine results, that’s a big plus!

True. I once had mine done overseas for like half the price. It took more than a month of website development for 6 pages, and 2 forms. We just kept going back and forth on the details. It was so frustrating. I had the same thing done locally a year after — you know, to update the look of the site. The guys took 2 weeks max. You can save if you outsource the work but sometimes, this isn’t really worth it.

Yes, outsourcing is a hit or miss. It helps to know who you are giving your web development project to. There are good web developers in other countries, for sure. It’s just that there are several benefits to keeping the project local. Communications and accessibility are just two of the benefits.

I don’t like putting outsourcing in a negative light. There are benefits to it. I’ve able to find great partners who aren’t local. Unfortunately, I think it’s also very true that you need to be lucky. Finding a good development company outside your locale is like looking for a needle in a haystack. You are better off going local if you want it easy and convenient. This actually makes the higher price of local service worth. And I’d pay for “easy and convenient.” So yes! Let’s all go local! Especially when it comes to web development!

Yes, agreed. Luck is a factor — as well as time. Surely, if time is not constrained, you can find a good non-local web design service provider. But then again, as in many projects, speed is essential. The soonest that you can find a development partner, the better. The great thing about Sydney is that there’s so much creative talent here. You won’t lack for options.

wow. this page just outlined all that i tried to do for my website. first, i tried doing it from scratch. and no, not using notepad++ or dreamweaver. i used the very basic notepad. can you imagine?! took me months to get a lousy site up. then, i tried one of those template designs. i still wasn’t satisfied. i tried wordpress too — i didn’t like how my site looked. i eventually got this contractor from eastern europe. i think he was good but the time difference and language just got in the way. i ended up getting my site done by a local team. and i bugged them almost daily up until i got my perfect website up. there, that’s my story! so, yes, go local! lol!

LOL! @Tyra. Your website development story seems like a saga! It’s good it’s over, no? Sadly, many share your experience. They try to create their website on their own or through a template, not knowing the intricacies that go with web design and development. Then, they outsource. While there’s nothing wrong with outsourcing outside the region, it can pose problems. You need a lot of patience for it. Finding someone local is always the better and easier way of getting your website up.

I had good luck outsourcing — I’m sorry to hear that you guys have had a bad time with it. I’m lucky I guess. But, I have to agree with you on the advantages of having a local team. I’ve tried both and have been happy with the output. But, I often give the more difficult projects to local web development teams. It’s just easier to coordinate. Plus, I can always just go to their office to talk about the details and implement fixes ASAP. That’s always a reason to keep the project in Sydney.

I agree with you on your point, Zooey. Proximity is a good reason to keep your web design project in Sydney. To us, it’s not really about needing to nag and call or come to the office constantly. Sometimes, clients don’t even need to see us or go to our office. It’s just the thought of it — knowing your web developer is reachable to you in cases of emergency. It keeps you feeling at ease and less stressed about your website project.

Here’s a question for you. Several clients here say that proximity made a big difference in getting their website made. Web development seems easier when we can constantly pester you guys. Do we really need to? What’s the common practice for web design projects? What are the milestones you usually follow? I’m thinking if that clients knew this, they won’t have to bug you every minute!

We appreciate this question, Ben! Yes, a client would not have to check in with his web development team often, as long as they have agreed to a schedule. The client should know when you expect some updates and when deliverables are due. It is the responsibility of his web design team to stay with this agreed schedule.

In practice, at least in our web design company, we start planning with the client. We are open agree to a schedule and a list of deliverables per milestone date. We stick to this schedule. In case something unforeseen happens and we need to postpone, we call the client before the milestone date and agree on a rescheduling.

I actually won’t mind some distance from my web design company. It’s not even a literal distance that I’d want. I prefer that the web development group that I use be as independent as possible. I want them to be able to work on my project, without needing that much intervention from me. I have a lot on my plate and my web design teach should know better when it comes to providing me with the best website for my business. What do you guys think of this? I mean, I’m ok with a web design Sydney team, as long as they don’t ask too much of my time. They should be professional about their work.

Martin, we’ve had clients like you who prefer independent website design teams. We think this is great as long as we agree first on what needs to be done and the approach to getting this done. It’s important to know what to expect from your website design company first, instead of rushing into it and working independently on what might not be what you had in mind.

I love that you have a Nothing Like Australia video in here to sell web design. LOL! But it fits I guess. There is nothing like getting your website designed by a local. It’s not really about getting better quality or anything like that. I’m sure there are great designers and programmers outside the country. But I like the connection that I have with Sydney web designers. They know me and understand the business environment that I need to survive in.
